The quirky love story Adam, which unspooled Tuesday night at a Brooks Brothers-hosted Cinema Society screening in New York, isn’t your usual big-budget chick flick. “It’s honest,” leading lady Rose Byrne said of the film, which follows the courtship of an Upper West Side woman and a neighbor with Asperger’s syndrome, played by Hugh Dancy. “It’s refreshing for a romantic comedy, which can often dive off into complete absurdity.” Byrne, who helped style her character’s wardrobe with pieces from her own closet, admits to being something of a clotheshorse. “I do love a bit of fashion,” she grinned (the Christian Cota dress, Bottega Veneta bangles, and Brian Atwood heels were a slight tipoff). “I wore a great pair of Prada heels in one scene,” she reminisced. “Shoes never get the right attention, but the discerning eye will see the pump.” Dancy, meanwhile, was downplaying his heartthrob status. “I don’t think of myself as any kind of suave individual,” he insisted. Fiancée Claire Danes, who, along with Zac Posen, Eva Amurri, and Charlotte Ronson, convened on the roof of the Gramercy Park Hotel after the film, would most likely disagree.—Alison Baenen—

A double billing of classics—iconic specs and Lou Reed—drew a crowd to the Whitney’s Sculpture Court last night for the kickoff of the Persol Incognito Design Exhibition. Guests from Charlotte Ronson to Matt Dillon swarmed in to check out the goods, and, more to the point, snag a goody bag. “They just gave me another pair,” Lucy Liu said of her shades. “Which is awesome.” Liev Schreiber, for his part, seemed more interested in taking in the performance by the legendary Velvet Underground frontman. After watching the first song, “Dirty Blvd.,” from the floor, the actor stepped out of his shoes and on to the couch in the VIP corner for a better view. Reed’s experimental, introspective set had to compete with a constant hubbub from the crowd. “Shhh!” a publicist admonished in a stage whisper. “This is a performance!” Schreiber was franker. “I wish people would shut the hell up,” he said, exiting mid-gig. He quickly softened, though, to add his thoughts on Reed: “He’s amazing.”—Alison Baenen—

For those not lucky enough to score an invitation to the Met ball, there are always the more democratic after-parties. Well, they’re not that democratic, but we digress. Two of the biggest draws this year were Margherita Missoni’s fête for OrphanAid Africa at 1 Oak in Chelsea and Rodarte’s shindig at the SubMercer. Missoni’s party started before Kanye West’s Costume Institute performance even ended, which is why Eugenie Niarchos, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, and Tatiana Santo Domingo were ready and waiting when their pals Arlenis Sosa and Joy Bryant finally made it the 60-something blocks south. Only Missoni took the time to change out of her dress—in her car—and those who went home to refresh or swap outfits ended up missing it altogether. “I’m jealous of your shoes,” Coco Rocha said to a young man in loafers. “Do you want to trade?” Further downtown, at Laura and Kate Mulleavy’s bash at the SubMercer, it was post-Met debauchery as usual: Shala Monroque swinging on a stripper pole; Jessica Stam sneaking smokes with Gossip Girl’s Jessica Szohr; both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen grinding on DJ Alex Hawgood behind the turntables. “Are we in a basement?” asked Dasha Zhukova, who brought Francesco Vezzoli and MoMA’s Klaus Beisenbach. “Because this is the chicest underground party I’ve been to. Importing the cast of characters behind Paris’ super-scene-y, super-debauched Le Baron nightclub to Moscow was no small undertaking. “But if you want to have a wild night, these are the only people to call,” said Anna Dyulgerova. The former magazine editor organized the affair to create some buzz for her fashion initiative Cycles and Seasons, and the party didn’t disappoint. There was the chic venue (an abandoned mansion in the center of town), the musical stylings of three-time Grammy winner Mark Ronson, a dance-off between Colette’s Sarah Lerfel and art director Emma Reeves, giant disco balls, and more. Visionaire’s Cecilia Dean, whose spiked Rodarte shoes matched the spiked mask of one reveler, threatened to break out some of the moves she’d seen at the famed Bolshoi Theatre. But ballet with the potential for bloodletting was just the start of the fun and games: We weren’t the only ones who spotted some rather scandalous snuggling behind closed curtains. “You can only live once, so have fun,” said Le Baron’s André Saraiva back on the dance floor. “I know I am.”—Derek Blasberg

Despite the molten sexuality oozing from the giant images on the walls of the pristine space on Mulberry Street, the party Byrdie Bell and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld hosted for shoe designer Brian Atwood on Thursday night was a straight-up family affair. Mother Dusty, brothers Andy and Zack, sister Tory, and right-hand woman Riley Vaill flew in to New York to join Brian in launching Role Play Rene, a deluxe and limited-edition book of photos by Tony Duran that feature an Atwood-shod Rene Russo in a series of steamy clinches with Jon Kortajarena. The evening’s big question was, where’s Russo been since Thomas Crown? The actress wasn’t on hand to answer that, unfortunately, but word is she’s been devoting herself to family life. So how did Atwood coax her to play along on camera? The designer had women like Russo, Lisa Taylor, and the late Gia Carangi in mind when he conceived the project. “I wanted to convey the sensuality of what women feel when they put on shoes,” he said with one of his blitzkrieg smiles. But it was his partner, Nate Berkus, who pushed him to go straight to the source. One phone call from Duran, and Russo was on set the same day. Back when, she was a good Christian girl, so if the stunning 55-year-old was indeed role-playing all over Kortajarena, we’ve clearly been deprived of her acting talents for too long. A full contingent of the local fashion brigade and a sprinkling of socials were at the party—Dr. Lisa Airan showing just what an asset a pair of Atwood heels can be, and Lauren Santo Domingo wearing his thigh boots a full season before the trend breaks for fall (as noted elsewhere, she added the garter belt herself). And for some pleasantly strange reason, everyone noticeably smelt great. Atwood himself was wearing Jo Malone’s Wild Fig, but don’t try asking stylist Lori Goldstein about her gorgeous fragrance: “I’ll tell you anything, but not the name of my perfume.”—Tim Blanks
