Everything is not what it seems at Sacai. What looks like a Rue Cambon skirtsuit reveals itself upon closer inspection to be a tweedy sleeveless vest topping a blouse with the same tweedy sleeves. (Designer Chitose Abe’s mannequin presentation makes it possible to spot the difference.) The skirt, by the way, appears to have shirttails peeking out between the pleats, but that’s another optical illusion. Meanwhile, the back of a deceptively simple cable-knit sweater dress is actually a cotton poplin shirt spliced to a flaring wool miniskirt. If all that sounds like heavy-handed gimmickry, it’s not. Sacai’s way of tweaking classics, splicing the masculine with the feminine, and dissecting and reconstructing familiar items is utterly charming. What makes it smart and gives the label’s clothes a point of difference on the sales floor is the way, say, the white pearl-embroidered slip underneath a charcoal knit blazer is detachable. That provides the woman who wears it more than two looks in one—the lacy little extra can potentially be worn under countless other pieces already in her wardrobe.Joining those multitaskers in Abe’s strong lineup were substantial Fair Isle knits, draped silk scarf dresses, and schoolboy-ish toggle coats with girlish flared sleeves, along with some clever gloves trimmed at the wrist with pearls, silver chain, and a spray of tulle. Who needs jewelry?—Nicole Phelps
source

They say fashion’s fickle, but tell that to all the New Yorkers who can’t get enough of Stephen Sprouse. Having already fêted the late designer last Thursday at a high-profile Louis Vuitton launch, an art opening, and a rock show, the likes of Marc Jacobs, André Balazs, and Debbie Harry seemed more than up for another commemorative shindig Tuesday night at Atelier. The cause for celebration this time: Roger and Mauricio Padilha’s The Stephen Sprouse Book. With so many of its essay and interview contributors available for autographs (Teri Toye co-hosted with Harry), sales were brisk. “Stephen was a designer unlike anyone else, so it was really important to make the book not look like any other book,” Roger said. Among those charmed by the absent page numbers and abundant visuals (including the six photos the authors coaxed out of Steven Meisel) was Details founder Annie Flanders. “All those designer biographies are so boring, and this has everything,” she enthused. “I think it’s one of the few designer books that’s really going to do really well.” Flanders’ presence was further testament to Sprouse’s undiminished drawing power. “I live in L.A. I swore that I’d never come to New York again in the winter,” she said. “But I wouldn’t have missed this for anything.”—Darrell Hartman
source

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana opened their eighth U.S. D&G store on Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles on Monday night, and young Hollywood naturally turned out to celebrate. Miniature burgers, pigs in a blanket, french fries, and tiny pizzas were on the menu and Bijou Phillips and Rumer Willis were on the dance floor, boogying to the musical stylings of DJ Mom Jeans (a.k.a. actor Danny Masterson). The designers themselves weren’t in attendance, but Ginnifer Goodwin, Paris and Nicky Hilton, Nicole Richie, Jennifer Morrison, Gabrielle Union, and Lauren Conrad represented the label in D&G L.B.D.’s. The lucky starlets probably went home with free dresses, but non-celebrities can feel OK about plunking down the charge card, economic crisis or not. From now through January 15, the boutique will donate 15 percent of all sales to the Art of Elysium.—Victoria Namkung
source

The past several months have been something of a roller coaster for Swaim and Christina Hutson. First there was the giddy high of being CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists for their lines Obedient Sons and Daughters; then there was the low of losing an investor and having to hit restart on a business that had been gathering momentum and recognition. But the husband-and-wife pair appears to have found strength in adversity, showing their new and refocused incarnation, now simply named Hutson, in a small presentation at the Bowery Hotel.Last season their womenswear line, Daughters, had begun to move away from its roots in his-and-her suiting with more dresses, knits, and softer separates among the masculine/feminine fare. With Hutson, the team intends to widen that gender divide. For Fall they used more substantial fabrications and stiffer constructions than they had for Spring, like a boiled wool stiffened with a canvas lining and a thick croc-stamped leather that Christina described as “armored versions” of the thirties looks that had been their inspiration. Though quite beautifully executed and perfect for a picture, such strict pieces may not be an easy sell. More likely to make it on the sales floor were Poiret-esque coats in faux fur or a microfiber that approximated feathers. The suit was still here in various forms, from a back-zipped mohair jacket and little shorts that pushed the limits of the form to a more traditional boxy angora jacket with wide-cropped pants. The Hutsons are top tailors, so it’s natural that their suiting will draw the most attention. But they have respectably moved out of their comfort zone, and might just be headed back up to the top of the hill.—Meenal Mistry
source
