Forty years ago this summer, an army of ungroomed idealists invaded upstate New York for a three-day concert that changed the world. Ang Lee’s latest film, Taking Woodstock, pays homage to that moment, and during last night’s downtown screening the weather gods seemed to be in on it, providing an amplified bass line of thunder and the kind of heavy rain that makes for a rip-roaring good time in the mud. “Just not inside the theater, I hope,” Lee cautioned. Speaking of: It turns out the film’s re-enactments of Woodstock’s famous free-for-alls weren’t entirely authentic. “It was mud mixed with cooking oil, so that we could slip faster,” lead Demetri Martin revealed. Guests happily slid into theme, with Erin Fetherston and some pals spilling out of a colorful VW bus splashed with psychedelic swirls and Claire Danes and cast member Emile Hirsch posing for photographers holding the daisies that were being handed out at the door. And at the after-party at the Bowery Hotel, there were almost enough headbands and flower-girl dresses for a Summer of Love, round two. Perhaps more than his co-stars, Liev Schreiber was in his element. “My mom and dad were big hippies and I spent time on communes,” the actor recalled. “I just remember the smell of soybeans everywhere. People were making all sorts of strange things out of soybeans: food, clothing, paper, everything. I suppose if I’d gone to military school, maybe I’d be pining for something like Woodstock. But I’m certainly pining for what it represents, and I think that’s what Ang was really after with the film.”—Darrell Hartman—

It’s official: Kate Moss is to Evans what Beth Ditto is to Topshop, thanks to “Uncle Phil,” as Moss calls Sir Philip Green, owner of both chains. Evans is the British high street brand that used to be subtitled “The Outsize.” Ditto caused a paparazzi scrum as she led a dazzling parade of big-girl pride into a party at Sketch in London last night. Daisy Lowe, Kelly Osbourne, Yasmin LeBon, and a sprinkling of young designer friends like Hannah Marshall and Julian Smith piled in after them to celebrate a facelift for a store that’s labored for decades under the reputation of label-of-last-resort for U.K. sizes 14 to 32. Not now: The party was thronged with style-leading East London plus-size clubbers deliriously glammed to the max in Ditto’s sweater dresses, blue sequin shifts, and flowery strapless bustiers. They’d been cast by Richard Mortimer of Ponystep.com (the maestro behind the now defunct club Boombox) to put the clothes through their inaugural evening of cocktails, dancing, and, as it turned out, singing. The crucial moment came when Ditto led her majorly coiffed and made-up crew into an inner bar for an impromptu karaoke session. As the Gossip singer took the mic, up jumped Kate Moss to help her lead a sing-along of Bowie’s “Starman.” Just as the cacophony reached its height, in walked Simon Cowell, long-standing mate and new business collaborator of Sir Philip (they are said to be cooking up an entertainment enterprise, yet to be defined). Finding himself in the middle of a room of larger-than-life lesbians making an outsize din might be Cowell’s worst nightmare, but TV’s most notorious savager of bad singing managed a ten-minute grin before escaping with Green and his wife, Lady Tina Green. As for the collection? It’s a mix of eighties-meets-fifties influences, spiderweb and face motif sweater dresses, domino and flower prints, leggings, and leather jackets timed to arrive in stores and online at www.evans.co.uk on July 9. Kudos to Karan

The modern designer, in case you didn’t realize it, does more than just make dresses. Take Donna Karan, who was recognized for her commitment to charity Tuesday night at the Friends in Deed benefit at Balthazar. “I like how they care for the patient—not just the disease,” she said of her dedication to the cause. “They understand that care needs to go beyond the sickness to the friends and loved ones.” Joining Karan were Sarah Jessica Parker, David and Sybil Yurman, Rachel Roy, and Karan’s fellow honoree, Bravo exec Andy Cohen. (Apparently, entertainment professionals can do more than just make reality shows about Real Housewives and Kathy Griffin.) After dinner, the designer and tablemates like daughter Gaby Karan de Felice and Ingrid Sischy were entertained by a magician. “It’s sometimes awkward to be honored for these things, because it should feel like second nature,” Karan reasoned, as the conjurer pulled out her card, the Queen of Hearts. “But I don’t mind if they’re fun, like this one.”—Derek Blasberg

There were plenty of opportunities to rub shoulders with celebs at Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s “Fabulous Night in Cannes” party on Friday—that is, if you could get past the pouffed shoulders. Kerry Washington, Dita Von Teese, and Peaches Geldof all wore Dolce & Gabbana dresses with exaggerated sleeves. They weren’t quite the ear-scraping variety found on Rihanna’s Met gala smoking jacket, but they came close. The designers themselves, who are in the news today facing (and vigorously denying) tax evasion charges, put on the most bella of figuras—both sporting tuxes and bow ties but going sockless. Cacharel

Cacharel is to France what Liberty prints are to England, or L.L.Bean is to America: a heritage brand that owes its appeal more to sentimentality than cutting-edge style—and that is not necessarily a bad thing. Often the best fashion moments come from an emotional reaction, as opposed to a sober bit of chin stroking about the sophistication of cut.But in the past few years, Cacharel has become better known for its revolving door of designers than its association with seventies vacations in Deauville. Moreover, the designers who came and went—including Britain’s Clements Ribeiro and Eley Kishimoto—had pretty much taken the sentimentality shtick as far as it could go, with their sepia-tinted prints for the brand. For a while, Cacharel looked in danger of miring itself so much in the past it could well be swept back there.But Cédric Charlier, the latest designer to take control, has done something very smart in this, his second collection for the label: Not only is he taking Cacharel forward, but he is taking it toward a gap that very much needed filling. Now that Miu Miu has gone so defiantly upmarket (never refer to it as a diffusion brand in Miuccia Prada’s presence—that’s a hot tip), there is little left for quirky teens and twentysomethings who want to look good but also pay their rent. Ladies, meet Cacharel.Charlier—who worked with the impressive likes of Michael Kors at Celine and Saint Alber Elbaz at the Church of Lanvin—played on Cacharel’s floral associations in this collection, but with a darker and thus more grown-up twist. Mini and oversize rosette patterns were against a black background, undercutting the sweetness, and there were some excellent floral dresses with sophisticated folds and pleating. Similarly, the winter coats were oversize with shoulders sloping downward, proving that Cacharel can join in on the trends seen in some of the more haute labels this season—not least at Lanvin, where there were some strikingly similar toppers. Pedro Lourenço

Here’s one that made Paris fashion sit upright on its little gold chairs: Brazilian designer Pedro Lourenço sending out a precociously accomplished, startlingly directional collection at the age of 19. Perhaps it was the power of public relations firm KCD, the endorsement of stylist Brana Wolf, and sheer incredulity over talk of the latest teen in fashion that brought a stellar professional front row to the Westin Hotel at 8 p.m., but the skeptics who walked in walked out genuinely amazed.Lourenço, it turned out, is working, with the complete conviction of youth, on the rigid shapes and geometries that are just beginning to make news. His paneled leather dresses in beige, black, and brown had high necks, long sleeves, and rows of stiff horizontal plastic slats and buttons, suggesting something between military frogging and venetian blinds. More of the same plastics—this time cut into triangles and vertically lodged, finlike, around the skirt of a dress—gave the illusion of a kilt or pleated skirt as it moved.And that was astonishing. Anyone with an eye to what’s going on in fashion—this year’s flippy miniskirt silhouette, or the fact that many designers are playing with latex and leather and pushing to create new volumes—would recognize Lourenço as creatively on the same sort of track as, say, the cohort just graduated from Central Saint Martins, or even some aspects of what Nicolas Ghesquière is producing at Balenciaga. Lourenço, post-show, described his inspiration as “Diana the Huntress, and the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.”Even more remarkable was the level of technical accomplishment in the color-blocked collection. That, it transpires, is because the designer has the help of his parents, Glória Coelho and Reinaldo Lourenço, who are both mainstay designers of São Paulo’s fashion community, and who own factories that can produce the boy’s clothes. Of course, all that puts him ahead of his peers in terms of access to everything from fabrics to the almost laughably grand setting of his debut—the room Yves Saint Laurent used for his couture shows. Yet no matter how young and how privileged he may be, the only test Lourenço actually faces is the one where insiders consider whether his clothes have genuine relevance and something new to say. Duro Olowu was the guest of honor at a dinner party hosted by Vogue’s Sally Singer that drew Maria Cornejo, Simon Doonan, and Lakshmi Menon, among others, to Norwood last night. The London-based, Nigerian-born designer, who’s married to the American curator Thelma Golden, was experiencing the after-effects of a successful trunk show at Barneys the day before, during which he’d helped dozens of ladies into and out of his best-selling patchwork printed tunic dresses, orchid-sleeve jackets, and high-waisted cheetah trousers. “I’m knackered,” he said, then proceeded to keep his tablemates Iman and Iris Apfel entertained all night. “Many of us make our livings finding things and collecting stuff, but there’s no greater curator of anything than Duro,” said Singer during her toast. “And that’s increased exponentially since he married Thelma.” Case in point: After everyone had sung Olowu and his pal Amanda Brooks “Happy Birthday” and then dug into the delicious red velvet cake, Golden table-hopped, touting the authenticity of the ingredients—”beet juice makes it that color, not food coloring,” she said—as well as the Harlem bakery, Make My Cake, from whence it came. Here’s another: “Duro has the most incredible taste,” said Brooks. “He combines couture shapes and the best Italian and French silk with his own love of African-inspired prints and outrageous colors.
