The quirky love story Adam, which unspooled Tuesday night at a Brooks Brothers-hosted Cinema Society screening in New York, isn’t your usual big-budget chick flick. “It’s honest,” leading lady Rose Byrne said of the film, which follows the courtship of an Upper West Side woman and a neighbor with Asperger’s syndrome, played by Hugh Dancy. “It’s refreshing for a romantic comedy, which can often dive off into complete absurdity.” Byrne, who helped style her character’s wardrobe with pieces from her own closet, admits to being something of a clotheshorse. “I do love a bit of fashion,” she grinned (the Christian Cota dress, Bottega Veneta bangles, and Brian Atwood heels were a slight tipoff). “I wore a great pair of Prada heels in one scene,” she reminisced. “Shoes never get the right attention, but the discerning eye will see the pump.” Dancy, meanwhile, was downplaying his heartthrob status. “I don’t think of myself as any kind of suave individual,” he insisted. Fiancée Claire Danes, who, along with Zac Posen, Eva Amurri, and Charlotte Ronson, convened on the roof of the Gramercy Park Hotel after the film, would most likely disagree.—Alison Baenen—

You’d think the long haul out to Brooklyn, in the rain no less, would have dampened the fashion set’s enthusiasm for Thursday night’s Prospect Park Summer Soiree. But as host and junior committee chair Sally Singer pointed out, a hefty piece of that set is local now. “It used to be that people thought they couldn’t live in Brooklyn because they wouldn’t get messengers. But since we started doing this party five years ago, the number of editors, contributors, models, and fashion designers that are here—I mean, ‘quadrupled’ would be to sell it short,” the Vogue editor said. She ticked off a list of colleagues—Kathryn Neale Shaffer, Chris Knutsen, Valerie Steiker, for starters—to prove her point. Held in the park’s two-story boathouse, the fundraiser had a thirties dance hall theme (there were rompers, feather headbands, and even a turban) and music by Chris Taylor of Williamsburg indie band Grizzly Bear. In the silent-auction area, Philip Crangi was eyeing a signed copy of Mark Borthwick’s Not in Fashion. What, the Manhattanite wasn’t tempted to bid on an evening of ten-pin at Brooklyn Bowl? “I’m not really an athlete,” Crangi sighed. “I’m a card player, and I tan as a sport. It’s a lot of effort to throw that heavy ball.” On the tented terrace, Cobble Hill resident Maria Cornejo was kibitzing with MObama fashion adviser Ikram Goldman and looking totally at ease in black wellies. “The quality of life is much better here than in Manhattan,” the Chilean-born designer told us. “I like to ride my bike to Red Hook and sit by the water. Actually, one of the prints I did for my Resort collection was from a photo I took there, of the sunset. It looks very glam, but it’s Red Hook.”—Darrell Hartman—
